©2000 SpeedCenter Publishing The unexpected loss of Tony and Shirley Bettenhausen, as well as team partner Russ Roberts and colleague Larry Rangel, is a terrible tragedy for the entire CART community. Tony's partnership with the Mercedes-Benz and Ilmor Engineering family was long-standing and successful, and we treasured Tony as a competitor and a true gentleman. We greatly respected Shirley's enthusiastic dedication to motorsports and to a number of charitable causes. And we recognize and respect the important contributions that Russ and Larry made to the Bettenhausen organization and to the sport of open-wheel racing. Tony and Shirley Bettenhausen were an inspiration to all those who knew them, and we will miss their passion and their presence very, very much. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of these four wonderful individuals.
