Announcement in Buenos Aires

Argentinean driver Norberto Fontana will drive the Della Penna Motorsports Toyota-Reynard # 10, following an announcement made Thursday evening in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the press conference, held at the facilities of the the Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA) building (curiously, ACA has the national motorsport power, delegated by FIA to Argentina), John Della Penna talked about the impressive test by Fontana at Homestead two weeks ago. The test served to convinced Toyota to support the team's decision to field Fontana in 2000.

After TRD could not provide Della Penna with more engines for a second car, the team chose to give the ride to Fontana (and to the sponsors he brings to the deal), while Della Penna's 4-year CART veteran Richie Hearn will remain with the team as a supplementary driver.

Norberto Fontana was to race for the F1 Minardi team this season, but the seat was given to Argentinean driver Gastón Mazzacane. Fontana started in four F1 races during the 1997 season, driving for the Sauber team. After that he went to Japan, racing with little success in Formula Nippon and the Japanese GT championship.

As part of the arangement, Della Penna Motorsport will be supported by the successful TV host and producer Marcelo Tinelli, as well as and some of the sponsors of this very popular TV show in Argentina.
