Shinji Nakano involved in testing incident at Milwaukee Mile

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (March 31, 2000) - Rookie FedEx Championship Series driver Shinji Nakano was involved in an incident in which he contacted the turn two wall Friday during a testing session conducted at the Milwaukee Mile at Wisconsin State Fair Park.

Nakano lost control of the Walker Racing Avex Honda Reynard, spun and contacted the wall on the mile oval early in his test session. He was briefly unconscious but came to before being transported to Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital for evaluation.

Nakano was examined by Dr. Jonathan Rubin, emergency medicine physician at Froedtert, who noted that the first-year CART driver complained of soreness in his neck but added that both a CAT scan and x-rays of his head and neck were normal. Dr. Rubin released Nakano from the hospital Friday afternoon.

"Although this is a small set-back for us in preparing for the Nazareth race next weekend," said Walker Racing owner Derrick Walker, "we fully expect to be racing there on April 9th. The good news is that Shinji is fine and after a short break will be back racing next week."

The rookie Japanese driver tested all day Thursday without incident at the suburban Milwaukee circuit, which will play host to the sixth stop in the 20-race 2000 FedEx Championship Series - the Miller Lite 225 - on June 4. Nakano is coming off an eighth-place finish in his inaugural Champ Car start last weekend in the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami Presented by Toyota, which was contested on the mile-and-a-half oval at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida.

Nakano joined CART this year after serving as a test driver for the Jordan Mugen Formula One team in 1999. He competed in the Formula One World Championship with the Scuderia Minardi Team in 1998, recording four top 10 finishes and ran with the Prost Mugen Honda Team in Formula One in 1997, finishing in points-paying positions in both Canada and Hungary.
