Injury required no surgery

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (May 3, 2000) --- Todd Tice, the vent/airjack crewman for Michael Andretti's racecar, returned home to the Chicago metro area this morning following a check-up with Indianapolis-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Terry Trammell yesterday afternoon. Tice sustained a broken right lower leg and ankle in a pit accident during the Rio 200 CART FedEx Championship Series event on Sunday, April 30 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when the fueling vent stuck in the receptacle of the race car and he was struck by the departing car.

Dr. Trammell put a temporary long leg cast on Tice following his accident so that he could return to the United States on Sunday night. As well as being one of the six men over the wall during pit stops, Tice is also a transport driver and had already planned on travelling to Indianapolis to assist with the delivery of the race equipment back to the team headquarters in Lincolnshire, Ill. Upon Trammell's arrival back into the U.S. on Tuesday, Tice was evaluated to determine if surgery was necessary.

As no surgery was necessary, Dr. Trammell removed the temporary long leg cast and installed a permanent long leg cast on Tice's right leg. The long leg cast will remain on his leg for three weeks before a short cast will replace the full one and will only cover the lower leg. The short cast will remain on Tice's leg for three additional weeks at which time, he will be fitted for a lower leg brace. It is expected that Tice could return to active duty at the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit.
