©2000 SpeedCenter Publishing Chicago, Illinois, July 6, 2000 Team Player’s driver Alex Tagliani emerged unharmed but received a bit of a scare today when his Champ car made contact with the wall coming out of corner 3 on the Chicago oval during a testing session for most of the teams in the CART series. The Canadian rookie was taken to the medical centre at the track following the incident but examinations determined that he had sustained no injuries. Damages to the car, however, were enough to force Team Player’s to return to Indianapolis and skip Friday’s scheduled testing session. "We don’t know what might have caused Alex to go off the track but we’re relieved that he wasn’t injured," said Team Player’s manager Phil LePan. "But there’s definitely too much damage to the car (a cracked transmission) for us to hope that we could have it back on the track tomorrow. That’s why we decided to leave right away for Indianapolis and continue our development work at the race shop." Tagliani said he was disappointed that the incident cuts short Team Player’s testing time on the Chicago oval, the track that is the site of Round 12 in the series at the end of this month. "At least we can take some consolation in the fact we were among the fastest in the morning session, although you have to be very careful in traffic with the new wings on this type of (one-mile) oval," remarked Tagliani, who added that his neck was a bit stiff as a result of the incident. "I made pretty solid contact with the wall but actually it surprised me more than it hurt me." The next race in the FedEx CART Championship will be held next weekend with the running of the Molson Indy in Toronto.
