All in search of their first championship

London, Canada (October 23, 2000) - The silly season has been in full swing for several weeks now but it has taken a backseat to the Driver's Championship. A battle not seen in recent history, pitting five drivers against each other all in search of their first championship. The victor of the Vanderbilt Cup will take home it's one million dollar prize and quite possibly another million by winning The Marlboro 500.

SpeedCenter recently attended the CART Timing and Scoring School of Statistical Spreadsheets and has attempted to translate the data into something coherent. We will update this information following Saturday's qualifying.

  • Gil de Ferran: Can DNF and still win. He needs to finish second with a bonus point to beat Fernandez, eleventh with both bonus points to beat Tracy, twelfth with both bonus points to beat Bräck and twelfth to beat Moreno. de Ferran's oval record this season is a first place best and two DNFs, and he placed ninth at Fontana last season.

  • Adrian Fernandez: Needs to finish seventh, eighth with a bonus point or ninth with both bonus points. Fernandez's oval record this season is a first place best and one DNF. Fernandez won at Fontana last season.

  • Paul Tracy: Needs to win, making it his fourth this year, while hoping that Fernandez places sixth or lower, and de Ferran finishes tenth or lower, and neither with bonus points. Tracy's oval record this season is a third place best and two DNFs. Tracy had a DNF at Fontana last season.

  • Kenny Bräck: Also needs to win the race, which would be his first and only win of the season, and hope that the others finish out of the points. Bräck's oval record this season is a third place best and 1 DNF. This will be Bräck's first visit to Fontana.

  • Roberto Moreno: A win would tie him with de Ferran in points but Roberto could win the tiebreaker due to his one fourth place finish and de Ferran having none. Moreno's oval record this season is a second place best and two DNFs. This will be Moreno's first visit to Fontana.

  • Jimmy Vasser: Could tie de Ferran with a win and the two extra points but Gil would take the cup with his two seconds to Jimmy's one.
