©2002 SpeedCenter Publishing Update - INDIANAPOLIS (August 2, 2002) - For the second time in his Champ Car career, CART FedEx Championship Series driver Adrián Fernández (#51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Lola/Bridgestone) will not participate in the CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio August 11 as he continues to recover from injuries sustained in a multi-car late-race incident at the Molson Indy Vancouver on July 28. Fernández, the only owner/driver in the series, missed the 1999 event due to a broken right wrist from an accident during practice for the Detroit race. The 1998 Mid-Ohio winner suffered two hairline fractures in his left pelvis and severe bruising on his right buttock, and has been undergoing rehabilitation therapy in Indianapolis with CART Chief Orthopedic Consultant Dr. Terry Trammell. "Adrián is undergoing his therapy and making progress," said Trammell. "He is experiencing less pain and is less dependent on his crutches, and we are proceeding a day at a time. The plan is for him to go back home to Arizona on Saturday morning and continue his rehab with the instructions that he has gotten here thereafter. He is going to be too sore to drive at Mid-Ohio." Fernández will not travel to Lexington, Ohio, and will remain in Phoenix. "It's unfortunate that I will not be at Mid-Ohio," said Fernández, who took time to phone in and address attendees during last night's standing room only crowd at the CART Town Meeting in Columbus, Ohio. "I am still in a lot of pain and I will abide by Dr. Trammell's recommendation. Now I am shooting to come back at Elkhart Lake. I am going to go home and continue my rehabilitation and put all the effort in so I can get back in the race car as soon as possible. Fernández along with partners Tom Anderson and Don Halliday are currently looking at driver options for the Mid-Ohio race weekend.
INDIANAPOLIS (July 29, 2002) - Fernandez Racing owner/driver Adrian Fernandez is expected to arrive in Indianapolis Monday evening and will begin treatment on Tuesday for injuries he sustained in an accident on Lap 92 of Sunday's Molson Indy Vancouver. According to Dr. Terry Trammell, CART Chief Orthopedic Consultant, Fernandez sustained a severe bruise to his right buttock and an insignificant hairline fracture of his left pelvis in the three-car accident with the cars of Patrick Carpentier, Alex Tagliani, and Bruno Junqueira. Fernandez is expected to begin rehabilitation and therapy on Tuesday with Trammell. Fernandez spent Sunday evening at Vancouver General Hospital, where he underwent an ultrasound that was negative and a CT scan late Sunday evening. He was released Monday morning. "Obviously I am in a lot of pain in my hip and lower back," Fernandez said. "The impact of the crash penetrated the chassis. Having that Kevlar seat saved me. I was compressed inside the cockpit. It was hard to breathe and extremely painful. With the impact to the side of the car, my left hip got compressed. "I went through a lot of tests at the hospital. My internal organs are fine. I am very sore and my neck is sore as well. I am going to Indianapolis to start therapy. Dr. Trammell will evaluate my progress at the end of the week and will make a decision as to when I will be able to drive." Further updates will be provided as they become available.
