Stewart Named Indy 500 Rookie of the Year
Tony Stewart, who completed only 82 laps at the 1996 Indy 500, was named Rookie of the Year, today.

Even Stewart was shocked.

"I felt the way Richie (Hearn) performed in the race, he would probably be a runaway with it," Stewart said after the announcement and a $10,000 prize.

Well Tony, most of us agree with you! Richie Hearn finished 3rd, completing all 500 miles of the race.

Stewart went on to say, "I feel I've been involved with the best bunch of rookies at the Speedway for a long time."

Hmmmm...If he's a rookie at the Speedway, how exactly does he know how "good" any of the past rookies have been in the past 79 races?

"We may be rookies at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but we're not rookie drivers," Stewart said. "This award deserves to be passed around to all the rookies this year."

And the money too, Tony?

Six Official Finishers in the Indy 500
It was first listed that there were many more drivers "officially" finishing the 1996 Indy 500. Until, that is, after the release of the official results.

The drivers who "really" finished are:

Pos Driver Laps
----------------------
1. Lazier 200
2. Jones 200
3. Hearn 200
7. Ongais 197
8. Matsuda 197
9. Buhl 197

That's 18% of the drivers actually running at the end.

At CART's U.S. 500 in Michigan, 11 out of 26 drivers were running at the checkered flag. That translates to 42% successful finishers.
