500 Miles Apart


ESPN's Emmy Award-Winning Outside the Lines series will document the same-day staging of the inaugural U.S. 500 and the traditional Indianapolis 500 in the network's one-hour Outside the lines: 500 Miles Apart tomorrow, Wednesday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

On Sunday, May 26, the U.S. debuted at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. While the Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with its traditional noon start.

ESPN's Outside the Lines: 500 Miles Apart, hosted by Boby Ley, will look at the build up and aftermath of the two races. Segments, including a look at the future of the competing races by ESPN auto racing analyst Dr. Jerry Punch, will be:

START YOUR ENGINES TWICE? Examines the impact of two 500-mile races on the same day. This piece will also focus on the development of the new IRL (Indianapolis Racing League) by Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Tony George, and how IndyCar formed the U.S. 500. -- Bob Ley

INDIANA OR MICHIGAN? Looks at the fans -- the die-hard Indianapolis 500 fans who supported the IRL at the Indianapolis 500 and those who traveled to Michigan for the U.S. 500 -- Greg Garber

FINANCIAL FINISH LINE Focuses on how some sponsors abandoned their long-standing Indianapolis 500 relationships while others stepped up to fill the void. -- Mary Ann Grabavoy

BYE-BYE INDY Looks at why two of IndyCar's most successful race teams, Team Rahal and Team Penske, opted for the U.S. 500 over the Indy 500. -- Armen Keteylan

ROOKIES REVVIN' UP Because of the new race, there were more rookies in the starting grid of the Indy 500 than in the previous 66 years. One carried the Unser name -- Johnny Unser, the nephew of Al, Sr. -- Mark Malone

DOUBLE UP Both the Walker Racing Galles Racing teams entered a car in the 500 and the U.S. 500, raising the question as to where an owner place his allegiance and which race he focused on. -- Bob Ley

THE OUTSIDE THE LINES SERIES ESPN's Outside the Lines series focuses on topical sports issues off the playing field. It has featured live shows and on-site shows, has profiled personalities from Cal Ripken Jr. to Mike Tyson, and covered topics ranging from AIDS to egos, and from memorabilia collectors to United States Presidents.

ESPN's Outside the Lines series, which premiered in May 1990, has won six Sports Emmy Awards and two Cable ACE Awards.
