Vasser Being Monitored
For Inner Ear Condition

Jimmy Vasser, the PPG Cup points leader and winner of a series-high four races this season, is being monitored for an inner-ear condition resulting from an accident last Saturday, June 8, during practice for the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix.

According to Dr. Steve Olvey, IndyCar's Director of Medical Affairs, Vasser has post-traumatic vestibulitis. Dr. Olvey said this essentially means Vasser's inner ear has been shaken, causing vertigo. Dr. Olvey also said the condition is "self-limited," meaning no specific treatment is required and Vasser's status is to be evaluated on a daily basis.

Vasser raced and finished 12th in Detroit on June 9, but skipped this week's open test at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, in order to have a specialist in Indianapolis, recommended by Dr. Olvey, exam and evaluate his condition. Vasser is resting at home.

"I look forward to racing at Portland next week," Vasser said. "I feel fine."

Vasser, driving the Target Reynard Honda for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, won The Inaugural U.S. 500 on May 26 in addition to wins in Miami, Australia and Long Beach. He has a 23-point lead over Marlboro Team Penske's Al Unser Jr. at the halfway point of the 16-race season.
