Lawson Out - Jones In

Albuquerque, NM (July 16, 1996) - Galles Racing International Indy Car team owner Rick Galles announced today that Eddie Lawson will be stepping out of the car for the time being, and Davy Jones will drive the #10 Delco Electronics High Tech Team Galles entry at the Marlboro 500 on Sunday, July 28.

A mutual agreement was reached between Galles and Lawson after the conclusion of last Sunday's running of the Molson Indy Toronto. Both agreed that allowing Davy Jones to race the car would give the team a fresh evaluation of the car's set-up and performance.

"Rick and I talked a lot about this decision and we both feel that this is the right thing to do," explained Lawson. "We both want to know why the results aren't where we thought they would be, and putting Davy in the car will give us the needed input."

Jones was chosen for this task because the team holds a current testing agreement with him, and he is familiar with the day-to-day operations of the race team. He competed in this year's running of the Indianapolis 500 for Galles Racing International and finished second, 0.695 seconds behind Buddy Lazier.

"I just want everyone to understand that this was a mutual decision between Eddie and myself," said Rick Galles. "Eddie is an outstanding driver and this was a very unselfish thing for him to do. I chose Davy because of his experience level and hopefully he'll be able to help us sort out the car."
