Jan Magnussen to step in for Penske

With Emerson Fittipaldi out, and Paul Tracy still doubtfull, Penske needs to fill at least one seat at Mid Ohio. 23-year-old Jan Magnussen from Denmark has been racing mostly in Europe, breaking Ayrton Senna's British Formula 3 record winning series with 14 victories in 1992, then moving on to McLaren as test driver and sitting in for Mika Hakkinen in one Grand Prix.

Paul Tracy's injuries sustained at Michigan Internationals Speedway may keep him out of the car during the upcoming race at Mid Ohio. Dr. Trammel will examine the Canadian again on Wendesday, although he expressed doubts that Tracy's fractured vertebra would be able to handle the stresses of driving at Mid Ohio. This would put Magnussen in Tracy's car to run as Al Unser's teammate, while the Hogan/Penske team would not field an entry.
