Tracy, Ribeiro, Zanardi Fined; Moore and de Ferran Warned
Indycar Stewards React after Recent Incidents

Vancouver, BC, Canada. (Aug. 30, 1996) — IndyCar stewards announced today that disciplinary action has been taken against several PPG Indy Car World Series drivers following the Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America on Aug. 18.

Citing articles 6.1 and 8.12 in the IndyCar Rule Book, which pertain to Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Unjustifiable Risk, respectively, drivers Paul Tracy, Andre Ribeiro and rookie Alex Zanardi have been disciplined for rough driving. Additionally, drivers Gil de Ferran and rookie Greg Moore have been advised by the stewards that their driving, on specific occasions, has not been satisfactory and that both will be observed closely in the year's final two races.

Tracy and Ribeiro have each been fined $40,000, of which $20,000 has been suspended pending their performance in the year's final two races. In the event of any rough driving infractions in these races, the suspended fine will be imposed, along with additional penalties as determined by the stewards.

Zanardi has been fined $20,000 without any additional penalties.

Chief Steward Wally Dallenbach, Chief Steward Designate Dennis Swan and Vice President of Competition J. Kirk Russell were IndyCar's acting stewards on these issues.

"We have seen some first-class competition in 1996," Dallenbach said, "and as the season draws to a close we are determined to maintain correct standards of sportsmanship and driver discipline on the race track. Our drivers are some of the best in the world, but it is inevitable that when it is so competitive, problems on the track will occur. As professionals, I am sure that all of our drivers will be concentrating on producing the best possible performance in the year's final races."

Article 8.12 of the IndyCar Rule Book reads in full: "Unjustifiable Risk — Any action that represents an unjustifiable risk or reckless endangerment in the opinion of the stewards will result in the assessment of penalties pursuant to Chapter 10 of this Rule Book. Decisions by the stewards and penalties assessed for unsafe acts are not subject to protest."

Chapter 10 of the Rule Book addresses penalties in IndyCar events.
