Bettenhausen to Test Four Drivers at Sebring

Bettenhausen Motorsports will be looking at four drivers over a five-day period at Sebring, Fla., this week in an effort to select a driver for the upcoming 1997 PPG Indy Car World Series.

Scheduled to test drive the Team Alumax Reynard/Mercedes-Benz will be Canada's Patrick Carpentier, Scotland is Allan McNish, Denmark's Tom Kristensen and Germany's Jörg Müller.

Carpentier won nine out of 12 races in 1996 to become the U.S. Formula Atlantic champion. Müller recently captured the European Formula 3000 championship. Kristensen has done most of his recent racing in the Japanese Formula 3000 series, but also ran in the European F-3000 series, finishing sixth after running a limited schedule. McNish, also a veteran of European F-3000, has spent the past season as test driver for the Benetton/Renault Formula One team.

Each driver will be allowed to test one full day. The test will be supervised by Team Alumax engineer Tom Brown, who recently joined Bettenhausen Motorsports after 12 years with Penske Racing.

"Our intention is to give each driver a fair and thorough test," said team owner Tony Bettenhausen. This is obviously a very important decision to make for our team and its future. Our plan is to run each driver for a full day and then we will evaluate their performances. After carefully taking into consideration many important factors, we will make our decision."
