Driver unhurt at Homestead Tire Test Mishap

HOMESTEAD, FL — Newman/Haas driver Christian Fittipaldi was uninjured Wednesday after his Kmart/Budweiser Lola Ford was involved in an accident during testing at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.

At approximately 9 a.m. during the final day of a three-day Goodyear tire test, Fittipaldi crashed into the wall while exiting Turn 4 of the 1.527-mile oval. He got out of the car on his own and reported no injuries. It is believed that severe gusting winds that have plagued the test since Monday may have contributed to the crash. The team ran only a partial test schedule Monday and Tuesday due to the high winds.

"I was coming off Turn 4 and the car swapped ends on me," Fittipaldi said. "I hit the wall and the car came to rest at the start/finish line. I'm not even hurt or bruised. It was so windy. I think the wind might have contributed to the crash."

Damages to the Kmart/Budweiser Lola Ford included the right and left rear, left front, front and rear wings and the gearbox. Fittipaldi had recorded roughly 400 test miles and was the fastest Goodyear-shod car prior to the accident.

"We were trying a new tire and it wasn't working as well as the others, but overall we're very happy with what we've learned here. Goodyear has been working very hard."
