Mark Blundell Sidelined For Australian Grand Prix

PacWest driver Mark Blundell, who sustained multiple fractures of his right foot during the Rio 400, will not drive in the upcoming Australian Grand Prix on March 31. Blundell was injured when brake failure sent his PacWest Reynard Ford Cosworth into the turn four wall on lap ten of the race.

"First of all, we’re thankful that Mark was not more seriously injured in what was a terrible crash," said PacWest CEO Bruce R. McCaw. "However, after he had a chance to get home and undergo a complete examination with his doctors, a decision was made based upon medical recommendation that he should not race in Australia. Mark is going to need a little more time to heal. In the event anything happened in Australia, the risk of permanent damage would be unacceptably high. We’re not willing to take any chances.

"I would also like to note that we have reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident and have concluded that the cause of the accident was a mechanical failure in which we assume full responsibility. There was no driver error involved whatsoever."

McCaw added that, although Blundell will not race in Australia, he will travel with the team to Surfers Paradise for the race weekend. "Despite missing the race, Mark is totally committed to the team and is very disappointed that he will miss the series’ first street race of the season."

Given the short amount of time before the Australian Grand Prix, PacWest will be unable to field a substitute entry for the race.
