Varsha, Sullivan To Team For 1997 Television Broadcasts

DETROIT — Veteran motorsports commentator Bob Varsha and former PPG Cup champion Danny Sullivan will form the announcing team for broadcasts of the 1997 PPG CART World Series on ABC-TV.

The 17-race schedule begins with the Grand Prix of Miami, presented by Toyota, on March 2 in Homestead, Fla. Eleven of CART's 17 races will air on ABC-TV this season.

Varsha has hosted numerous events on ESPN, and most recently was the network's lead commentator on the Formula One circuit. He also covers the International Hot Rod Association and International Motor Sports Association for ESPN, and serves as host for MotoWorld, an anthology series produced by the network.

Sullivan won the 1988 PPG Cup and the 1985 Indianapolis 500 and earned 17 career victories and 19 pole positions during his 14-year tenure as a CART driver. He has served as a race analyst for ABC Sports since his retirement in 1995.

"I think Bob and Danny reflect the young, fresh, dynamic tone we want to set for the future of Championship Auto Racing Teams," said Andrew Craig, CART president and chief executive officer. "We know from our fans that the selection of these two very talented individuals will be immensely popular, and we look forward to having them provide the incisive, insightful commentary that our fans deserve."

The ABC Sports pit reporter pairing of Jack Arute and Gary Gerould will continue to work the PPG CART World Series.
