Teams Prepare For Big Weekend At Laguna

Seventeen-plus drivers will be attending an open test session at Laguna Seca on Saturday and Sunday.

Present will be Target/Ganassi teammates Jimmy Vasser and Alex Zanardi, Andre Ribeiro and Adrian Fernandez from Tasman Motorsports, Team Rahal's Bobby Rahal and Bryan Herta and Mauricio Gugelmin and Mark Blundell from PacWest. Penske Racing may test with both Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy after originally planning to send only Tracy.

Also participating will be Max Papis and Hiro Matsushita of Arciero Wells Racing along with Juan Manual Fangio, II and P.J. Jones from All American Racers.

Richie Hearn of Della Penna Racing, Patrick Carpentier of Bettenhausen Racing and Gil de Ferran of Walker Racing will join the rest of the teams and drivers at the scenic 2.238 mile road course.

Gerald Davis' new team will make its first public appearance with driver, Gualter Salles after skipping the Spring Training weekend.

After Spring Training many of the teams stayed in Florida and tested at Sebring. Appearing there were the Newman/Haas, Bettenhausen, Team KOOL Green, Brahma Sports and Project Indy teams.

Brahma Sports Team driver Scott Pruett, was the fastest during that session with a time of 54.9 seconds. Teammate, Raul Boesel, was not so lucky as he spun out while entering the backstraight and damaged the rear suspension.

Patrick Carpentier was impressive and consistent pulling laps in the mid-55s with Parker Johnstone and Christian Fittipaldi a couple of tenths slower. Fittipaldi was having gearbox problems and the team was having difficulty working on the new Swift chassis.

German Rookie Arnd Meier impressed team owner Andreas Leberle, running just .5 seconds off the pace of the veterans in a Lola T9700-Ford.

Meier will run ten races this season, beginning with Surfer Paradise, while Dennis Vitolo will run five more, with the driver in the remaining two to be determined.

Following the Sebring test, the Newman/Haas, Brahma and Marlboro Penske teams returned to Homestead where the weather was hot and windy.

The big surprise at Homestead was Michael Andretti in his new Swift. He was quickest in the Swift with a lap in the very low 28s, while Pruett, Boesel and Tracy were in the 28.6 and 28.7 range.

Also surpising was seeing Tracy driving a Reynard 96I on Monday and Tuesday before switching back to the PC-26. Chuck Sprague, Penske Racing's general manager said that, "(we) figured as long as we had it we might as well run it and learn what we could before we shut down that testing effort and go racing."
