Brazilian returns for a full season

Chicago, Ill. Feb. 26 — Roberto (Pupo) Moreno will pilot the Payton/Coyne Racing #34 car for another full season. Details of the contract were not disclosed. Moreno met with Dale Coyne last weekend in Miami working out contract details for 1997.

Just like in 1996, Moreno's main sponsor will be the Brazilian Data Control Corporation. The car will be a Firestone shod 1997 Lola T9700, powered by a Ford Cosworth XD engine.Moreno will be racing with teammate Michel Jourdain Jr., who joined the team this winter after competing in select races of the CART series in 1996.

The 1997 PPG CART World Series will be Moreno's third season racing Indy cars. He finished 16th in the 1986 CART Indycar world series, before taking a 9-year CART-sabbatical during which he spent several years in Formula One as test driver and contender for various teams. In 1996, he returned to CART and scored a career-high third place finish at the inaugural US500 on May 26. He finished the '96 season with 34 points in 21st place.
