Andretti Wins In Debut Of American-Made Swift!

Michael Andretti scored a convincing and historic win Sunday in the Grand Prix of Miami, presented by Toyota, at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.

Andretti drove the debuting Swift 007.i chassis to victory in the very first race for the United States-based manufacturer in Indy car competition. Andretti drove his Kmart/Texaco Havoline Swift Ford-Cosworth XD across the finish line 4.202 seconds ahead of the Penske Mercedes-Benz of Paul Tracy. Defending PPG Cup champion Jimmy Vasser was third in his Target Reynard Honda.

Each of the top-three race cars featured entirely different chassis (Swift, Penske and Reynard) and three different engines (Ford-Cosworth, Mercedes-Benz and Honda).

But the top story was a victory for Swift in its debut race. The win marked the first Indy car victory for an American-made race car since Gordon Johncock won the season-opening PPG Cup race at Atlanta in 1983 in a Wildcat chassis.

Andretti, who captured a record-extending 36th CART PPG Cup win, also may be the only driver in motorsports history to take two manufacturers to victory lane in their debut race. In 1994, Andretti drove a new Reynard chassis to a debut win at the season-opening race in Australia.
