Zanardi on Record Streak

Fresh off a record-setting performance in the PPG CART World Seriesseason opener at Homestead, Florida, Target/Chip Ganassi Racing driverAlex Zanardi chases another record as he bids for the pole position at theSunbelt IndyCarnival Australia at Surfer's Paradise.

Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) has captured five consecutive polepositions to tie Mario Andretti (1984) and Danny Sullivan (1988) for thePPG CART World Series record. A sixth straight pole gives Zanardiundisputed possession of the record, as did his ninth consecutivefront-row start at Homestead, whick broke a deadlock with Bobby Unser(1979-1980) and Bobby Rahal (1985.)

Interestingly, Sullivan's consecutive pole streak and Zanardi's havecome at many of the same venues. Sullivan put his streak together atMid-Ohio, Road America, Nazareth, Laguna Seca and Miami, while Zanardi'shave come at Mid-Ohio, Road America, Vancouver, Laguna Seca, andHomestead.

During his streak, Zanardi has earned $135,000 in Marlboro Pole Awardmoney, including rollover bonuses of $60,000 and $45,000 for winningfrom the pole at Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca, respectively. Zanardi, the1996 PPG CART World Series Rookie of the Year, earned $220,000 from theMarlboro Pole Award fund for his series-leading six pole positions andthree victories from the pole in 1996.
