The morning practice session at the Long Beach Toyota Grand Prix isover, and Alex Zanardi (Target/Chip Ganassi Reynard Honda) has onceagain positioned himself to extend his title for consecutive poles setlast weekend at Surfer's Paradise.
Zanardi set a lap time of 52.076 seconds on his last practice lap, toovertake second place Michael Andretti. Andretti had set a lap time of52.310 in an earlier run.
Rounding out the top ten fastest laps in these first practice sessionswere, in order:

Bobby Rahal
Paul Tracy
Raul Boesel
Gil de Ferran
Roberto Moreno

Most notable of the morning session times was the performance of RobertoMoreno driving his first practice session for Newman-Haas in theKMart/Budweiser Swift Ford, posting a time of 53.128.
