Only a partial return to racing

Christian Fittipaldi will participate in his first 'race' since sustaining a broken leg in last month's Sunbelt IndyCarnival Australia when he takes on Newman/Haas Racing teammate Michael Andretti in a slot car race Thursday, May 8 at the Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway at Nelson Piquet International Raceway in Rio de Janeiro. The event is a prelude to this Sunday's Hollywood Rio 400 (same day coverage on ABC at 2:30 p.m.ET) PPG CART World Series race.

The race, scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. local time, is being organized by Texaco, a primary sponsor of Andretti's Kmart/Texaco Havoline Swift Ford. Fittipaldi's Kmart/Budweiser Swift Ford is being driven by his Brazilian countryman Roberto Moreno during Christians recovery period.

"I'm looking forward to getting back to racing," Fittipaldi said. "The slot car race will put me one step closer to getting back into the real race car. My therapy is making me stronger every day, and I know I can beat Michael! I just wish it could be the real thing in my home country."

"It will be great to compete against Christian again," said Andretti, the current PPG Cup leader with 51 points. "It doesn't matter whether he's running, riding his bicycle or racing slot cars, he's always a tough competitor. You can't forget that it would have been huge for Christian to win the Rio 400. He's going to put all of that effort into this slot car race. As for the race on Sunday, I'm not sure what is worse — watching on TV like he did the last two races, or from the pits, where he has to see it up close. We'll have to keep an eye on him and make sue he doesn't try to sneak into the car."
