Longer, more corners, but are there passing zones?

A first map of the possible future Molson Indy at Vancouver tracklayout was just spotted by SpeedCenter. It reveals a track layoutthat overlaps with the former start/finish area and the rear part ofthe previous track, then leads around False Creek to the south of theold site, and returns pretty much on the same path to the old trackarea. It obviously is longer than the old track (which was rathershort for a cart track), has a lot of 90 degree corners and chicanes, and should provide some areas suited for good passing in the brakingzones at the end of two fast stretches.

The proposed new layout is 3.21km (or about 1.99miles) in length, which is 0.42km longer than the old track. The location of the trackis in an area where urban expansion may force the city to developareas that ultimately may relocate the race to a totally differentlocation, away from the prefered downtown area. 1.3 milion dollarswill have to be spent by race organizers to bring streets used by thenew track up to CART specifications, and to construct the requiredinfrastructure for the paddock and audience seating. The new trackpromises a 15% higher seating capacity.

If a race will actually happen there depends largely on how the Canadian government decides to enforce its tobacco legislation.
