CART CEO responds to IRL announcement

Andrew Craig, president and chief executive officer of Championship Auto Racing Teams, released the following statement regarding the elimination of the "25-8" rule at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and changes in the policies relating to car and engine specifications in the Indy Racing League:

"The elimination of the '25-8' rule is a positive first step toward resolving the differences that exist between the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indy Racing League and CART. We believe these changes signal that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IRL recognize the importance of having the teams and drivers that race in the PPG CART World Series as part of the Indy 500.

"Notwithstanding the elimination of the '25-8' rule, there remain many major issues that separate CART and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We hope motor racing fans everywhere are not misled into believing this announcement guarantees the teams and drivers that comprise CART will be racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1998."
