Sets new lap record for the Milwaukee Mile

Team Penske driver Paul Tracy continued his torrid assault on his PPG Cup competitors Saturday by winning the pole for Sunday's Miller 200 at the Milwaukee Mile.

Tracy toured the historic track at an average speed of 184.286 mph (20.160 seconds) to break Raul Boesel's 1993 record of 165.572 mph. The Milwaukee Mile was repaved prior to the 1996 Miller 200 but qualifying that year was cancelled because of rain.

Tracy is now in sole-possession of 8th place on the all-time pole win list with 11, just behind Bobby Unser's 14 career poles.

Maurico Gugelmin put his Hollywood Reynard Mercedes-Benz second on the grid for his fifth top-five qualifying effort of the year. He turned a lap of 182.252 mph (20.385 seconds). "Big Mo" has qualified no worse than eighth this year.

Boesel was third fastest in his Brahma Reynard Ford with a lap of 181.815 mph (20.434 seconds) while yesterday's quickest driver Patrick Carpentier could do no better than fourth in the Alumax Reynard Mercedes-Benz with a lap at 181.761 mph (20.440 seconds).

Greg Moore rounded out the top five in the Player's Reynard Mercedes-Benz. Four of the top five qualifiers drove Mercedes powered cars.
