Pruett Wins Second Career Pole At Portland

Turns the Detroit table on Gil de Ferran

Brahma Sports Team driver Scott Pruettwithstood a strong challenge from Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/CumminsReynard Honda HRR) today and improved on his overnight time to win thepole for Sunday's Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 presented byTexaco/Havoline at Portland International Raceway.Pruett improved to a best lap speed of 119.246 mph (59.589 seconds) toedge de Ferran for the top spot within five minutes of the completionof the session. Pruett won Friday's provisional pole at an averagespeed of 118.834 mph (59.589 seconds) and was on track today when deFerran bumped him to second with a lap of 119.126 mph (59.443 seconds)set late in Saturday's session. One race ago at the ITT AutomotiveDetroit Grand Prix, Pruett was also on the provisional pole only to bebeaten the next day by de Ferran. This time, however, Pruett quicklyanswered the call and bettered de Ferran's time just minutes after theBrazilian's best effort.The pole is the second of Pruett's career after capturing the top spotlast year at Detroit.Christian Fittipaldi continued a great comeback from a broken leg atthe Sunbelt IndyCarnival Australia by qualifying third at an averagespeed of 118.510 mph (59.752 seconds) in his Kmart/Budweiser SwiftFord Cosworth. Fittipaldi has missed six races but today's performanceis a career best qualifying effort. He qualified fourth at RoadAmerica in 1996 and actually started third at Milwaukee in that sameyear, but starting positions for the latter race were determined bypractice speeds due to rain.
