Fernandez motors on in Lola

The Tasman Motorsports Group has announced that the team's third-year PPG Cup driver Andre Ribeiro will race a Reynard chassis at the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland, July 11 - 13. Tasman has struggled in PPG CART World Series competition this year using Lolas, and Ribeiro's sixth-place showing in Australia has been the team's best finish.

The Reynard, which was acquired from Derrick Walker's Valvoline/Cummins racing team, will be powered by Honda, which Tasman has campaigned since its first year in PPG CART World Series competition in 1995. The Cleveland switch will mark a return of the same LCI International Reynard Honda/Firestone combination that Ribeiro drove to victory at New Hampshire in 1995. The victory was the first for Ribeiro, Tasman and Honda and only the second modern-era win for Firestone.

Tasman continued its winning ways with a switch to Lola chassis last year. Ribeiro won at Rio and Michigan while his teammate Adrian Fernandez scored his first win at Toronto in the Tecate/Quaker State Lola Honda.

The 1997 season has been a different story, however, as Lolas have lagged behind the race-winning Reynard and Penske chassis. In fact, Ribeiro's Australia finish is the best showing for a Lola in 1997 PPG Cup competition. Prior to Cleveland, six Lolas have been raced full-time including the two-car teams from Tasman and Payton/Coyne Racing and single car efforts from Della Penna Motorsports and Project Indy.

Fernandez will stick with the Lola for the Cleveland race where he will benefit from the latest offering of newly developed parts.
