Veteran Atlantics driver brings sponsorship and takes over second Payton/Coyne ride for 4 events

Veteran Atlantic driver Charlie Nearburg, of Dallas, Texas, has announced he will drive for the Payton/Coyne Racing Lola/Ford-Cosworth XD in four upcoming PPG CART World Series road races this season.

Nearburg will compete in the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland, Miller 200 at Mid- Ohio Sports Car Course, Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America, and the Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey.

"CART is one of the premier racing series in the world," said Nearburg. "I have pictured myself driving a competitive Indy car since I began my driving career, and I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the Payton/Coyne Racing Team. The Lola/Ford-Cosworth package is improving daily and the Firestone tires are extremely fast. I look forward to driving at four circuits where I have extensive experience."

Team co-owner Dale Coyne commented, "Charlie is an extremely smooth and experienced driver. His success at these circuits, combined with his performance at Sebring and Le Mans this year, shows he can compete with the best drivers in the world. I'm excited that Charlie is part of our team and I feel confident he will find success in CART."

The Payton/Coyne Racing Team is co-owned by NFL all-time rushing leader Walter Payton and Coyne. Dale Coyne Racing advanced from Super Vee and Atlantic to Indy car racing in 1984. Payton joined the team as co-owner in 1994. Payton/Coyne Racing, which has consistently provided first-year Indy car drivers a chance to break into CART, finished in third place in last year's U.S. 500.

Nearburg, who finished fourth in the 1996 Atlantic finale at Laguna Seca, has been a consistent front-runner in the KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship and the Bosch Super Vee series. In 10 year professional career, Nearburg has participated in all forms of auto racing including Trans-Am, IMSA, and at Le Mans.
