Molson Indy one of Rahals favorite venues

Bobby Rahal makes no secret about it.

The Miller Lite Reynard Ford driver loves the Molson Indy.

No reason he shouldn't.

The three-time PPG CART World Series champion won the inaugural Toronto race in 1986, has sat on the pole twice (1987 and 1992) and has been on the podium seven times in 11 events here (including a third place finish last year and runner-up runs in 1995 and 1996). Despite stirring runs in Rio and Cleveland, 1997 has yet to produce a win for the 24-time CART victor, though it could well come with a strong run this weekend.

"We passed a lot of cars last week in Cleveland," Rahal said, "and given our history in Toronto, that should mean good things not only for this weekend, but for the rest of the season."

Rahal's teammate Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) has also been successful at Toronto despite injuries sustained in a 1994 practice accident there. He won the Indy Lights races in 1992 (his first CART-sanctioned victory) and 1993 and finished a strong sixth in the Molson Indy PPG Cup run.

Both Herta and Rahal are coming off season's best finishes at Cleveland. Herta finished third and Rahal came home fifth.

"Last year we came into Toronto after a top-five finish at Cleveland the week before and had a strong run to finish sixth," Herta said. "After that, we never finished lower than sixth the rest of the season, and that included a couple of podium finishes. This time we are coming to Toronto after a podium appearance at Cleveland and hoping to spark the same kind of hot streak that started for us here last year."

The secret of success for both drivers could rest in Toronto's tricky section heading out of the final turn and into the first corner.

"Get off the last corner well and carry speed through the first turn," Rahal recommends. "You can pass on Lakeshore between (turns) two and three, but you'll need to be fast through (turn) one to do it."

The Molson Indy will air on ABC TV at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 20.
