Ganassi may put '96 Indy 500 winner into Marlboro 500

Arie Luyendyk is scheduled to arrive at the California SpeedwaySaturday to drive the Target Reynard Honda HRR for Alex Zanardishould Jimmy Vasser not need what is his backup racecar.

Team owner Chip Ganassi said Luyendyk, who drove for Target/GanassiRacing in 1992 and 1993, will qualify and race Vasser's backupmachine only if Vasser does not need the racecar. Both of Zanardi'srace cars were severely damaged in two separate accidents on Friday.CART Director of Medical Affairs Dr. Stephen Olvey has not releasedZanardi, the new PPG Cup champion, to drive this weekend.

Ganassi sent his private jet to Phoenix Saturday morning to bringLuyendyk to Fontana.

"We have confidence that Arie can do a good job for us in thisdifficult situation," Ganassi said. "We know Arie and he knows us andI think that will be important."

Luyendyk won the 1993 Indianapolis 500 pole position and finishedsecond in that race for Target/Ganassi Racing. He won this year'sIndy 500 in addition to the 1990 running of the same race.
