CART President and CEO Andrew Craig has announced a new team testingpolicy for the 1998 season. In a press conference following Sunday's Marlboro 500 Presented ByToyota at California Speedway, Craig said certain blackout periodswould be applied during various times of the year.

"With our schedule moving from 17 to 19 events (new events inHouston, Texas and Motegi, Japan) next season, we decided we neededto offer a break for our teams in their testing and competitionactivities," said Craig. "This addition to our testing rules meansthat team members will have a few more guaranteed days at home and webelieve that is important with the schedule increasing to the levelthat it has. We believe it's particularly important with three racesoverseas in 1998."

CART has designated five holidays - New Year's Day, Easter, Fourth ofJuly, Thanksgiving and Christmas - around which there are blackoutperiods. On the two days preceding and following those holidays, CARTteams are prohibited from testing. The two weeks following the finalrace of 1998 - on November 1 at California Speedway - also aredesignated as a testing blackout period. Craig added that the newpolicy will take effect beginning this Thanksgiving.
