Contract terminated one year before expiration

By Peter Burke

Paul Tracy is out of a ride for '98 after Penske decided to releasehim from his contract that was supposed to include one more season.

This comes as a surprise to many, because Tracy managed to win 3races and lead the PPG CART World Series for several weeks driving acar that was decidedly uncompetitive for most of the season. Hefinished the season fifth in points, while teammate Unser finished theseason in thirteeth place. However, all of Tracy's good finishes cameearly in the season. Near the end of the series, he rarely managed tofinish more than the first two laps of several races. He completed theseason with an accident in the early laps at his team owner'ssuper speedway facility in Fontana.

Penske did not offer any reasons for the contract termination, butannounced that Tracy will be replaced by Andre Ribeiro, who spent mostof his season behind the wheel of an uncompetitive Lola. Ribeiro'sties to Marlboro Latin America may be playing into the choice -Marlboro has been an associate sponsor on Ribeiro's car for severalseasons.

Ribeiro will run next to Al Unser Jr, who has been confirmed toremain with Penske for another season.

This now opens up a whole new round of silly season issues:

  • Where is Tracy going?
  • Who will be driving for Tasman?
