Green to announce driver lineup in teleconference

With numerous rumors floating around and no real facts as to who willbe driving for Barry Green's team in 1998, anticipation for thisannouncement has been growing over the last few weeks. Wednesdaymorning at 10am Eastern time, the team will announce plans to thepress in a CART teleconference. SpeedCenter will try to participateand post news as soon as possible (thee may be a brief synapses already duringthe conference - keep your eyes on our welcome page).

The scenario is pretty complex, and that's why everyone wants to knowwhat Green will do in Kool's second CART year. The first year wasdisappointing to say the least, and many analysts expect ParkerJohnstone to step down from his contract that has one year remaining. However, Parker has strong ties to Honda and if forced out at Green,he may take the engine elsewhere.

At Laguna Seca, Dario Franchitti ran his last race for hogan, becausehe allegedly already signed a contract with Green. A second car forthe team has been in discussion for a long time, but again, nothinghas been announced officially. A two car team of Johnstone/Franchittiwas a good guess for the last month. A combination of Parker'sexperience and maturity with Dario's raw talent forspeed would combine for a well-balanced two car effort.

Just last weekend, though, the name Paul Tracy and Kool wereconnected by many insiders, and some Canadian radio sources alreadyreport that Tracy signed with Kool/Green. With this third driver inthe mix of things, a two car team seems almost inevitable, but who ofthese three names will be missing when the lineup is announcedtomorrow? If Parker goes and takes Honda along, what engine willGreen run? Dario and Mercedes are not on best terms to put it mildly, and Tracy could care less - the car he'll get if he drives for Greenin '98 will be more competitive than any Penske he recently hurledaround the tracks, no matter which engine is inside it (remember:Fangio outqualified both Penskes at Fontana...).

So much for the speculations - tomorrow we'll all know more. In the meantime, without much media blitz, Patrick Racing confirmed Adrian Fernandez to drive next to Scott Pruett during the next season. All the Mansell talk apparently evaporated before 'ole Nige even got to test the Patrick ride.
