Microsoft CART Precision Racing:
"pushing the limits of racing reality?"

By Peter Burke

A first peak at what to expect from the next generation CART racingsimulator is available at the Microsoft website.A preview is due to be released in November, just in time to facilitate yourseasonal shopping decision making - provided you own a more recent PC running a Microsoft operating system. On the websiteyou can find a 14MB demo movie (if you feel like testing your modem's throughput ), as well as screenshots that reveal attention to detail not seen in previous simulators.

When hitting that website, don't be shocked when Bob Vasha tells you that the sim is pushing the limits of "racing reality" - a pretty big claim, but I guess in marketing the minor detail to differentiate the terminology as to where limits are being pushed falls by the wayside. I always thought racing simulators are virtual, and can at bestpush limits of "realism" - of which there is plenty to be found in the new sim. Except for the lack of tobacco and alcohol sponsor logos, everything else is detailed to near perfection. Even thetelemtry screen is close to what real teams see at the track. If the pit stops are as hot and exciting as the real thing remains to be seen, but the screenshots atthe preview website are definitely hot looking, so good, you just know your 8 month-old P166 isn'tgonna cut it any longer...

Fron another source, SpeedCenter hears that the older IndyCar Racing II simulator mayalso be revamped and re-released this winter. Will there be some competition for Microsoft? Did CART license it's product name to two companies in the samemarket?

Having been a real simulator addict in the past myself, I have been considering to add a section to SpeedCenter that would dedicate some attention to virtual CART racing. A simulator column maybe? Hot sim links? Please email Peter Burke if you care to see such informationon this site in the future.
