CART visited Japanese facility in preparation for test session

Officials from CART and the FIA and the Japanese Automobile Federation(JAF) visited the new Twin Ring Motegi motorsports complex in Motegi,Japan last week to continue preparation for the upcoming CART OpenTest on the facility's oval track scheduled for Saturday and Sunday,November 1 and 2.

Twin Ring Motegi hosts its first CART race, the Budweiser 500, March28, 1998.

"We went (to Motegi) to prepare for two upcoming events, the test andthe race," said J. Kirk Russell, CART vice president of competition."The second circuit inspection, involving members of our staff, theFIA and the Japanese Automobile Federation, has been completed. Thisis another natural step in the process of putting on the event.

"Things are in good shape. We're pleased with Twin Ring Motegi. It isa fantastic facility."

Joining Russell on the Motegi visit were Dennis Swan, CART vicepresident of logistics; Billy Kamphausen, director of logistics, andLon Bromley, director of safety. Fourteen drivers, including formerPPG Cup champions Al Unser Jr. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes-Benz) andJimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda HRR) and the new Team KOOL Greenpairing of Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti (both in KOOL ReynardHonda HRRs) will participate in two days of testing on the 1.5-mileoval, located 60 miles northeast of Tokyo.

Testing sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30p.m. each day.
