Bettenhausen releases Carpentier
Canadian Press reports today that the 1997 CART Rookie of the Year, PatrickCarpentier, was released from his contract with Bettenhausen Racing. Patrick's seasonwas highlighted by a second place finish at Gatway in May, afterleading 25 laps late in the race before Paul Tracy caught up withhim.
Late in the season, Carpentier was plagued by an injury sustained offthe track in a bicycling accident. Brazilian veteran Roberto Morenosubstituted rather impressively at Vancouver and Laguna Seca. At Fontana,Carpentier crashed out in practice and could not compete.
This adds two new variables to the post silly-season activities: whogets to drive for Bettenhausen, and where will the '97 Rookie of theyear drive in 1998? Speedcenter will track the developments as closeas possible.
