By Peter Burke

Robby GordonTeam owner Cal Wells III announced today that he signed Robby Gordon to a multi-yearcontract as test driver and consultant. The contract also allows for Gordonto compete in an unspecified number of races during the 1998 FedEx Championshipseason.

Gordon returns to CART from a season in Winston Cup, where he ran for Felix Sabates. Latein 1997, Gordon ran a single CART event for Hogan Racing at Fontana, where he finishedeighth and showed that his hiatus to stock car racing had not affected his skillsin a champ car.

Persistent rumors this winter have suggested that Hiro Matsushita would retire afterthe CART race in Japan this March 28. Right now Gordon is mentioned as the "fifth driverfor Toyota" in CART — not as Matsushita's replacement. We will have to wait and see if Cal Wells III plans to run 3 cars at select events, or if Hiro Matsushita indeed will usethe opportunity to announce his retirement at his home event.
