Racing legends join forces

Homestead, Fla. (Feb. 3) — Two of the most famous names in the history of auto racing — Bettenhausen and Fittipaldi — have joined forces to compete in this years CART FedEx Championship Series.

Tony Bettenhausen, the youngest son of an American racing legend, and Emerson Fittipaldi, a former CART and Formula One World Champion, are pleased to announce their working arrangement today at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.

According to Bettenhausen, owner of Bettenhausen Motorsports which campaigns the Team Alumax Reynard/Mercedes-Benz, he and Fittipaldi have formed a working relationship with the intention of expanding the team for 1999.

Last month, Bettenhausen announced that Brazils Helio Castro-Neves, Fittipaldis protege, will drive the Team Alumax entry in this seasons CART FedEx series. For 1998, Fittipaldi will serve as a technical advisor to the team and work with Castro-Neves and the teams engineering staff headed by Tom Brown.

"This is a major step for our team in bringing in someone of Emerson Fittipaldi's stature," said Bettenhausen. "Emerson has not only been one of the greatest champions and drivers in this sport, but he has also developed into one of the sports best ambassadors worldwide. Were also excited because we feel he will be essential in helping our team grow in the future."

"The Bettenhausen name is one I have always respected in racing," said Fittipaldi." Over the years, I have watched Tony build up his team and I think it has a lot of potential to be a winning operation. I am looking forward to my association with Tony and his team and I am confident that together we can make it grow into a winner."

Fittipaldi, who announced his retirement as a driver in 1997, won 21 CART races and a CART title to go along with 14 wins and two world titles in F-1 during his highly successful career.
