Spring Training Combined Practice Report ©1998 SpeedCenter Internet Publishing, Inc. All Sessions CombinedIn spite of the windy conditions during testing, the field is withing a very tight percentage of the best practice speed. But are these speeds at all an indication as to who will really be fast this year? In 1997, 6 out of the top 10 drivers in Spring Trainingwent on to win races during the season. Others in the top ten came close. Only Richie Hearn and Parker Johnstone didn't deliver on their earlytesting promise. Andretti was 10th in '96 Spring Training and won the opener race at the same track. This year, Bobby Rahalwas 10th overall at Spring Training... And don't count out GregMoore. He tested only on day one of testing in the gustyconditions, because he and Patrick Carpentier had to sharethe same 1998 Reynard this week. Fastest Rookie was Tony Kanaan who ranked 7th overall, only 1.32% slower than JimmyVasser's best lap of the event. SpeedCenter expects to receive a set of nice photos from the event within the next few days. Stay tuned. pos | car | driver | chassis engine tires | laptime | mph | km/h | % of best time | 1 | 12 | Jimmy Vasser | 98I/HRK/F | 25.467 | 212.039 | 341.171 | 100.00% | 2 | 6 | Michael Andretti | 009.c/XD/G | 25.622 | 210.756 | 339.107 | 100.61% | 3 | 17 | Mauricio Gugelmin | 98I/108E/F | 25.631 | 210.682 | 338.988 | 100.64% | 4 | 1 | Alex Zanardi | 98I/HRK/F | 25.678 | 210.297 | 338.367 | 100.83% | 5 | 11 | Christian Fittipaldi | 009.c/XD/G | 25.712 | 210.019 | 337.920 | 100.96% | 6 | 27 | Dario Franchitti | 98I/HRK/F | 25.788 | 209.400 | 336.924 | 101.26% | 7 | 21 | Tony Kanaan (R) | 98I/HRK/F | 25.802 | 209.286 | 336.741 | 101.32% | 8 | 33 | Patrick Carpentier | 98I/108E/F | 25.811 | 209.213 | 336.624 | 101.35% | 9 | 8 | Bryan Herta | 98I/XD/F | 25.818 | 209.156 | 336.533 | 101.38% | 10 | 7 | Bobby Rahal | 98I/XD/F | 25.823 | 209.116 | 336.467 | 101.40% | 11 | 16 | Helio Castro-Neves (R) | 98I/108E/G | 25.913 | 208.390 | 335.299 | 101.75% | 12 | 26 | Paul Tracy | 98I/HRK/F | 25.931 | 208.245 | 335.066 | 101.82% | 13 | 3 | Andre Ribeiro | P98/108E/G | 25.969 | 207.940 | 334.576 | 101.97% | 14 | 9 | JJ Lehto (R) | 98I/108E/F | 26.011 | 207.604 | 334.036 | 102.14% | 15 | 20 | Scott Pruett | 98I/XD/F | 26.096 | 206.928 | 332.948 | 102.47% | 16 | 40 | Adrian Fernandez | 98I/XD/F | 26.126 | 206.691 | 332.565 | 102.59% | 17 | 36 | Alex Barron (R) | 98I/RV8C/G | 26.178 | 206.280 | 331.905 | 102.79% | 18 | 99 | Greg Moore | 98I/108E/F | 26.190 | 206.186 | 331.753 | 102.84% | 19 | 2 | Al Unser Jr. | P98/108E/G | 26.202 | 206.091 | 331.601 | 102.89% | 20 | 5 | Gil de Ferran | 98I/HRK/G | 26.206 | 206.060 | 331.550 | 102.90% | 21 | 98 | PJ Jones | 98I/RV8C/G | 26.556 | 203.344 | 327.180 | 104.28% | 22 | 25 | Max Papis | 98I/RV8C/F | 26.601 | 203.000 | 326.627 | 104.45% | 23 | 18 | Mark Blundell | 98I/108E/F | 26.610 | 202.931 | 326.516 | 104.49% | 24 | 19 | Michel Jourdain Jr. | 98I/XD/F | 26.787 | 201.590 | 324.359 | 105.18% | 25 | 10 | Richie Hearn | 009.c/XD/F | 26.955 | 200.334 | 322.337 | 105.84% | 26 | 34 | Dennis Vitolo | 98I/XD/F | 27.018 | 199.867 | 321.586 | 106.09% | 27 | 77 | Arnd Meier | 97I/XD/G | 27.039 | 199.712 | 321.336 | 106.17% | 28 | 24 | Hiro Matsushita | 98I/RV8C/F | 27.139 | 198.976 | 320.152 | 106.57% | 29 | 24X | Hiro Matsushita | 98I/RV8C/F | 27.472 | 196.564 | 316.271 | 107.87% | 30 | 15 | Christian Danner | 97I/XD/G | 27.554 | 195.979 | 315.330 | 108.19% | 31 | 43 | Hideshi Matsuda (R) | 007.i/XD/F | 27.581 | 195.787 | 315.021 | 108.30% | 32 | 9X | JJ Lehto (R) | 98I/108E/F | 27.685 | 195.051 | 313.838 | 108.71% | | Legend: Chassis P98 = 98 Penske 98I = Reynard 98I 97I = Reynard 97I 007.i = Swift 007.i 009.c = Swift 009.c EngineHRK = Honda HRK Series Champ Car 108E = Mercedes Benz Ilmor 108E RV8C = Toyota RV8C XD = Ford Cosworth XD TiresG = Goodyear Racing Eagles F = Firestone Firehawks
