Faster than Vasser inSpring Training

Greg Moore recorded the fastest lap to date on the reconfigured 1.5-mile oval atHomestead Motorsports Complex. His time of 25.260 seconds set during the morningtest session yielded an average speed of 213.776 mph, besting the previousunofficial track record, a 25.467 (212.039 mph) set by Jimmy Vasser during CART'sSpring Training. On Day One of Spring Training in early February, Moore proved hewas serious about his FedEx Championship Title chase when he posted the quickesttime despite difficult windy conditions. Thursday's drive merely underscored thepoint.

Moore and the Forsythe Racing Team were the quickest of four other CART teams andsix other drivers. Better yet, the team felt there was more to come.

"I think Greg would like to be the first guy to break the 24-second bracket,"said Team Manager Tony Brunetti. "My job for the rest of the day is to make surethat doesn't happen. I think we'll try to save that last little bit for thequalifying on the 14th of March."

"The car was pretty good right out of the box," Brunetti continued. "that timecame fairly easy for us."

Moore, 22, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, became the youngest winner in CARThistory when he recorded two victories last season, at the Detroit and Milwaukeerounds of the FedEx Championship Series.

Moore's teammate at Forsythe is CART's 1997 Rookie-of-the-Year, PatrickCarpentier of Quebec. Carpentier tested the team's Player's-backedReynard-Mercedes on Firestones on Wednesday.

The CART season kicks off Sunday, March 15 with the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miamiat the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports complex.
