Team to field the only Lola this season

By Peter Burke

After much speculation it is now confirmed: Davis Racing will field the only Lolaentry in the 1998 FedEx Championship Series. Earlier last month, the teamparticipated at spring training with their 1997 Reynard chassis, testingsophomore CART driver Arnd Meier of Germany for a full season ride, while keepingtheir choice of chassis undetermined.

Yesterday, Meier confirmed a full season contract with Davis Racing. The packagethey anticipate to campaign with Baan Software sponsorship throughout the 1998season is a Lola/Ford/Goodyear combination. Meier said that the Lola may turnout to be a big gamble - it could pay off very well for the only team to run it, or it could be a big mistake if it hasn't improved from last year's rather dismalT97/00 version.

The team has an option to return to a Reynard chassis in a worst case scenario, just as they are in a position to enter the first race of the season with a '97Reynard chassis. Meier said this was not very likely, tough. Meier added thatthere would most likely not be second car for Davis. Lola development effortswill thus focus on the German driver who last year made his first appearance in aT97/00 Lola prepared by Project Indy.

This week, Davis Racing and Meier will take the '98 Lola to FirebirdInternational Raceway in Arizona for a first shakedown.
