Official CART press release

Alex Zanardi, Bryan Herta and Greg Moore were assessed penalties by CART Chief Steward Wally Dallenbach following Sunday's Miller Lite 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Zanardi was penalized for unjustifiable risk in regard to separate race incidents with JJ Lehto and Helio Castro-Neves. Zanardi was placed on probation, fined $50,000 and was not awarded a PPG Cup point for Sunday's 12th-place finish. He will, however, maintain his 12th-place finish in the official results and the point will not be reassigned.

"After reviewing the tapes and interviewing all the drivers involved [Zanardi, Lehto, Castro-Neves], both accidents should have been avoided,'' Dallenbach said. "In both cases, Alex was the overtaking driver."

Herta was penalized for unjustifiable risk for his opening-lap incident with Dario Franchitti and placed on probation.

Moore was fined $5,000 for unjustifiable risk in regard to his unsafe act in the pits that resulted in contact with Andre Ribeiro in his pit stall.

"We will not tolerate any acts of unjustifiable risk," Dallenbach said.

The length of the probation periods for Zanardi and Herta is indefinite and at the discretion of the Chief Steward.
