Unexpected driver move may upset many silly season theories

By Peter Burke

Rahal had mentioned before that he was impressed with the work ethics displayed byforeign drivers in CART. Analysts discounted these statements, assuming that therehad to be an American in the Miller car. Names like PJ Jones and Richie Hearn were high on the Rahal option list among insiders. Papis was mentioned as a possible Zanardi replacementat Ganassi, with Alex lobbying for his friend.

But the latest of chess moves for the 1999 seasonseems to have recently taken place. Unconfirmed sources haveMax Papis moving from the Arciero Wells MCI Toyota to Team Rahal. This would mean that within a span of just a few weeks Arciero Wells wouldhave lost both of its top shelf drivers.Reportedly Papis was offered more money to stay with theArciero Wells Toyota team but decided to take a paycut with incentives andmove to Team Rahal.

Just yesterday, Papis was quoted in a press release on cart.com stating:

"It's taking longer than I expected, but I have a will to succeedburning in my heart."

The article then adds that, although he has not finished better than 11th in this, his thirdseason of CART competition, he's not discouraged by the car'sperformance.

Maybe the temptation of the Rahal ride was too much to stick with the Toyota program. Papisstarted in CART "owing a lot to Ferrari" — now, if moving on to Rahal, he will have to addToyota and Arciero Wells to the list of stepping stones towards success.

Will drivers be lining up for the Arciero ride like they did for Rahal's seat? Will bryan Herta be the Miller driver and Max pilot the Shell car? When willwe get official announcements?
