German driver wins Budweiser Accelerator Award at Vancouver

Arnd Meier had his best qualifying effort on a street courseas he will start on the outside of Row 10 (20th position) for tomorrow'sMolson Indy Vancouver.

The Davis Racing driver's effort was one position better than his previous setat Long Beach, this past April, and his finest start since this year's U.S.500. Meier will start next to Andre Ribeiro. Meier drove hisHasseroder/TotalTel Lola-Ford/Cosworth to a time of 65.339 (99.285 mph), morethan one second faster than his Friday time of 66.702.

Thanks to Meier's dramatic improvement, he was the winner of the BudweiserAccelerator Award, the second time he has won the award, but first since the1997 IndyCarnival Australia. Meier won the award for making the greatestspeed improvement in his qualifying attempts. A $1,000 check was presented toC.A.R.A. Charities in Meier's name.

Meier made continual progress throughout the session, running fast times onfour consecutive laps, the first time he has done that on a street or roadcourse this season. Meier and the team felt he could have improved his timeon his final lap of the session, however an engine problem prevented a finalfast lap.

He will be hoping to add to his points total of four, a career high. Meier isliterally on a roll as he has finished in the top 18 for six consecutiveraces. The highlight of this was his best Champ Car finish - 10th at the lastrace, Elkhart Lake.

"The car was very stable for qualifying. I think we could have gone quickerhad I not had a problem with my engine on the final lap, but I'm happy I got agood run. I felt I should have done a faster time on an earlier lap, butthat was destroyed by another car that got in my way."

On winning the Budweiser Accelerator award:
"I think this shows the fans how much progress we've made on the track.  It'sa real nice award."
