Three drivers compete for seat same day Montoya does first test for Ganassi

(October 21, 1998) -- Arciero-Wells will test German Jörg Müller, Italian Emmanuel Naspetti and Indy Lights champion Cristiano de Matta at Homestead starting at the end of this week. Team owner Cal Wells is looking for a second driver to partner the experienced Scott Pruett who will lead the Toyota-powered team's attack next year. Max Papis and Robby Gordon were Arceiro-Wells' drivers this year but Papis will join Bobby Rahal's team next month and Gordon is forming his own team in partnership with John Menard.

Müller, Naspetti and de Matta will run on both the road course and the oval at Homestead, at the same time that Juan-Pablo Montoya tests for the first time for Chip Ganassi. "Obviously, de Matta has a bit of an advantage over the other two guys because of his experience in Indy Lights, but we'll bear that in consideration. if we don't get a clear answer, we'll go back and do it again, maybe with some other people. We want to find the right young guy to run with Scott."

Juan-Pablo Montoya's first Champ car test with Chip Ganassi's team begins on Thursday on the road course at Homestead. Montoya is schedule to run on the road course on Thursday and Friday and on the 1.5-mile oval on Sunday and Monday.
