A second faster than during initial test

Mauricio Gugelmin completed over 600 miles of trouble-free testing duringthree days at Sebring International Raceway that began Sunday. Gugelmin tested the team's new'99 Reynard Chassis outfitted with the '98 Mercedes-Benz IC108E engine.

"The car is behaving very consistently," remarked Gugelmin. "Everything is running very well.We have made tremendous progress mechanically. There were a few things we weren't really quitesure about and now we are really sure. I'm very happy."

Big Mo ran a quick time of 50.8 seconds, nearly a second quicker than the team achieved inNovember while testing the '99 car for the first time.

Gugelmin is prepared to rebound from a disappointing 1998 season where he managed a bestfinish of fourth and placed 15th in the FedEx Championship Series points standings. 1998was a year in contrast to 1997, where Gugelmin and teammate Blundell scored a combinedfour wins and three poles, finishing fourth and sixth in the Championship.

"I think we are in better shape than we were before 1997," said Gugelmin in an optimistictone. "This test will certainly make the Holidays happier for me. I'm looking forward togetting the new engine and working on the short ovals."

The next test for PacWest is scheduled at the Phoenix oval on January 11-13.
