Gugelmin's first run with new short oval aero package

Mark Blundell and Mauricio Gugelmin combined to complete over 850 miles during three days of testing at Phoenix International Raceway. Blundell posted a best time of 20.3 seconds while Gugelmin ran a 20.6 second lap.

"It's been a good test," remarked Blundell. "We went through a bunch of areas on the car, and where we went wrong last year, we've gone forward with this year. We're back, and we're producing competitive lap times consistently. I'm coming away very happy."

The team tested two '99 Reynard Chassis outfitted with the Mercedes-Benz IC108E engine. The test week was trouble-free for both drivers allowing the team to learn more about the new short oval aerodynamic regulations implemented by CART.

"It was my first time running with the new package," said Gugelmin. "It's the hope that it will produce good racing, but I have my doubts. But we will stick with it. We're making good progress . . . our times look competitive. The test also allowed me to get a good read on a long run, despite the fact we don't race here [at Phoenix]. I think we have a very promising season in front of us. Our road course testing has been good, and now my first oval test was very good, so I'm excited." PacWest will participate in CART Spring Training, taking place February 3-4, at the Miami Motorsports Complex in Homestead.
