Now 20 Firestone cars in CART field

Robby Gordon has done everything he can to field a top-notch racing team in 1999. Count Firestone tires as part of the equation.

Team Gordon, co-owned by Gordon, John Menard and Mike Held, announced today the selection of Firestone as its tire for Championship Auto Racing Teams and Indy Racing League competition. Firestone's long-standing relationship with Menard, along with Gordon being a 1998 Firestone driver with Arciero-Wells Racing, made it a no-brainer for the tire maker to add the newly-formed Gordon team to the fold.

The addition gives Firestone a total of 20 cars in CART, the most for the tire maker since it joined the series in 1995. In conjunction with Team Menard, Gordon will also compete in the IRL's Indianapolis 500. "We are very pleased to add Team Gordon to the already-potent roster of Firestone teams," said Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director. "Robby Gordon is a proven winner in open-wheel cars and, with the aid of Firestone tires, is driven to returning to victory lane once again. We couldn't be happier than to have Robby running on Firestone tires in both CART and IRL events."

Gordon, 30, has already logged a varied and successful driving career in off-road, open-wheel and stock-car machines. His CART debut came in 1992 and he is a two-time race winner in CART.

In the past two seasons, Gordon has driven in 16 CART races for Firestone, one with Hogan Racing in 1997 and 15 for Arciero-Wells Racing in '98. He has three top-10 finishes with Firestone, with a best showing of seventh place last year at Nazareth.

"Everyone at Team Gordon is excited about our alliance with Firestone," Gordon said. "Since the inception of the team we have attempted to attain the best possible people and equipment available. We know we have the best tire now in Firestone. Team Gordon believes the addition of Firestone is another component that will help us win races as quickly as possible."
