720 miles at Sebring and Homestead prepare for the season

Mark Blundell and the #18 Motorola PacWest team completed over 720 miles during four productive days of road course testing at Sebring International Raceway and the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.

Blundell, a triple race winner in 1997, relished the opportunity to shake down the team's fourth Reynard R99I at Sebring. "The February 24-25 session was my first solid road course test of 1999, considering that I was ill when we tested at Homestead earlier this month," he remarked. "We ran a lot of miles over the two days, and we have a good picture of what we need to go forward."

A two-day test at Homestead, which concluded Monday, was similarly successful. Blundell, who completed 370 trouble-free miles in his #18 Motorola PacWest Mercedes-Benz, noted: "I feel very happy with the outcome of our testing here. We have many new avenues to explore from a technical standpoint and I'm feeling more confident with the car. We finished the second day with a 68.0 second lap, which is a whole second faster than we tested here before."

Blundell will be joined by teammate Mauricio Gugelmin for three days of oval testing at the 1.5-mile Homestead circuit on March 4-6. The test will provide an opportunity to shake down another PacWest vehicle as one of the team's two new, state-of-the-art, 53-foot Featherlite trailers makes its highway debut.

The entire PacWest team will return to south Florida later this month for the FedEx Championship Series season opener, the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami presented by Toyota on March 21.
